Cold War Era

In 1944, representatives from the United States, Great Britain, the Soviet Union, and China drafted specific proposals that were ratified as the United Nations Charter on October 24, 1945. The purpose of the United Nations is to maintain international peace and security; to develop friendly relations among nations; achieve international cooperation in solving economic, social, cultural, and humanitarian problems, and promote respect for human rights and basic freedoms. It was hoped that by establishing the UN worldwide problems associated with the post-WWI and Great Depression periods would not recur. It was hoped that the UN could re-globalize the world in a less anarchic way than the defunct League of Nation had managed or not managed to do. With the financial and military support of the U.S., international agreements and institutions were established to support the UN’s mission. The United Nations’ peace keeping role have not proved to be very successful, but in the areas of eradicating disease, poverty, and development it has been much more successful.
