English Language Arts Test

JANUARY 17-20, 2006

(Make-up period January 23-27, 2006)

The Department is extending the testing time by 10 minutes for Book 1 of the Grade 6 English Language Arts Test. This brings the total testing time for Book 1 to 55 minutes. This change in the time allotted applies only to Book 1 of the Grade 6 English Language Arts Test. For Book 2 and Book 3 of the Grade 6 Test and for all of the other grades, teachers administering the tests are to follow the times allotted in the printed Teacher’s Directions.

To ensure that the correct amount of time (55 minutes) is provided to all students taking Book 1 of the Grade 6 Test, the printed English Language Arts Test Teacher’s Directions for Grade 6, 7, and 8 that each school receives along with its shipment of test books must be amended as follows:

Page 3: In the table, under Day 1, Book 1, in the column to the right, change “45 minutes” to “55 minutes.”
Page 7: In the text in bold under the first SAY, the second paragraph must be revised to begin, “Today, you will have 55 minutes to read…”
Page 8: In the text in bold under the fifth SAY, the second paragraph must be changed to “You will have 55 minutes to read…”
Page 8: In the text in the line above the seventh SAY, “After 35 minutes,” must be changed to “After 45 minutes,”
Page 8: In the text in the line above the last SAY, “After 45 minutes,” must be changed to “After 55 minutes,”

To assist schools in making these revisions to the printed Teacher’s Directions, a revised edition of the English Language Arts Test Teacher’s Directions for Grade 6, 7, and 8 is now available on the Department’s web site at: http://www.emsc.nysed.gov/3-8/home.html.

Please photocopy this notice and provide a copy to each teacher who will be administering the Grade 6 English Language Arts Test.
